I received my undergraduate degree in molecular biology and physiology at the University of Belgrade, Yugoslavia. I earned my PhD in Cell, Molecular, and Neurosciences in 1998 at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, working on the cell and molecular biology of premature birth. Postdoctoral training in cell and molecular biology of ovarian cancer followed at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. In 2001, I joined the UCLA Department of Medicine and started working on iron metabolism, specifically on the role of the hormone hepcidin in the regulation of iron uptake and distribution in the body.

Why did you go into hematology?
Pure chance. I answered an ad in the UCLA hallway posted by the Ganz lab which said: "Got Iron?"
Who or what has most inspired you in your work?
My mentor, Dr. Tomas Ganz. He is the best teacher I have ever had and has been a constant source of inspiration and support.
Which scientific papers have made a great impression on you?
Recent examples from the field of iron metabolism: a paper from Sophie Vaulont's group which described hepcidin's role in iron metabolism using accidentally-created hepcidin-deficient mice; a paper from Nancy Andrews' group on severe anemia in patients with rare liver tumors overexpressing hepcidin, which lay groundwork for understanding anemia of chronic disease.
What is the most important lesson you've learnt in your professional life?
I am only at the beginning - still learning a lot of new lessons.
What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?
Contributing to understanding the pathogenesis of iron disorders such as hemochromatosis and anemia of inflammation.
What are the best and worst aspects of your job?
Best: Constant learning; interaction with students and with my lab mates. Worst: Deadlines
When or where are you happiest?
One of the things that exhilarate me is getting a great result at work.
What do you do to relax?
The usual things. Love to read books. Love to go to the movies. Also, love to visit my home town, Novi Sad.
What book are you reading at the moment?
Nabokov's 'Lolita', 'Sputnik Sweetheart' by Haruki Murakami.
What's your most evocative piece of music?
Maria Callas' arias and Tchaikovsky Piano concerto No.1 - my father and I used to listen to those when I was little.
What's your favorite film?
There are so many, but for example, Out of Africa and Moonstruck.
What are your hobbies?
Anything related to my dog.
What car do you drive?
