Dr. Ira A. Shulman is Professor, Vice Chair of Pathology, and Director of Transfusion Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He is also Director of Laboratories and Pathology at the Los Angeles County/University of Southern California (LAC+USC) Medical Center and medical director of the blood bank at the USC Kenneth Norris Cancer Hospital.
Dr. Shulman earned his BA degree from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), where he graduated Summa Cum Laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Shulman received his medical degree from the University of Southern California (USC) School of Medicine where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society. He did his residency in pathology and fellowship in blood banking/transfusion medicine at the LAC+USC Medical Center in Los Angeles.
He is the author or co-author of more than 100 papers, monographs, and book chapters, most of which deal with the clinical and laboratory practice of transfusion medicine.
Dr. Shulman has been active in professional organizations including the College of American Pathologists (CAP), the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), and the California Blood Bank Society (CBBS). He has served as chair of the Transfusion Medicine Resource Committee of the CAP; as a member of the board of directors of the American Association of Blood Banks; as president of the CBBS; and as chair of the Council on Transfusion Medicine for the ASCP.
He is currently chair of the AABB Clinical Transfusion Medicine Committee and the Web Master of an internationally subscribed transfusion medicine discussion group (www.cbbsweb.org/) called the e-Network Forum.
Dr. Shulman lives in Mar Vista, California, with his wife, Nadine, and in close proximity to their two daughters, Paula and Stefanie. Dr. Shulman and Nadine recently celebrated their 31st wedding anniversary.

Why did you go into hematology?
My mentors inspired me to pursue a career in clinical pathology and transfusion medicine.
Who or what has most inspired you in your work?
John Zoeger, high school science teacher who pushed me harder than anyone had before. Meyer Zeiler, MD, the physician who introduced me to laboratory medicine Donald Feinstein, MD, internist/clinical haematologist who inspired me to focus on blood Asa Barnes, MD, the blood banker who took me under his wing and mentored me.
Which scientific papers have made a great impression on you?
Developmental Instability and Individual Variation in Hemispheric Asymmetry, presented at the Annual Meeting of the International Neuropsychological Society, Chicago, 2001. This paper is special because my daughter, Paula Shulman, is a co-author!
What is the most important lesson you've learnt in your professional life?
The most important question that you can ask is "Why" The most important answer you can give is "Why not".
What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?
A great family and family life.
What are the best and worst aspects of your job?
The people that I work with. The people that I work with.
When or where are you happiest?
Taking long walks with my wife in the meadows of Yosemite.
What do you do to relax?
Listen to music on my iPOD or computer.
What book are you reading at the moment?
The Bible Unearthed.
What's your most evocative piece of music?
Listen to the Music by The Doobie Brothers.
What's your favorite film?
Silence of the Lambs.
What are your hobbies?
Coin collecting.
What car do you drive?
Saturn.
